1. St. Vincent-St. Mary, Akron, Ohio (25-1)
Previous: 1. Won Division II state championship. Without LeBron James, who
graduates, probably to the NBA, winning a second straight state title will
be difficult.
2. Pike, Indianapolis (29-0) Previous: 2. Won Class 4A state
championship, beating DeKalb (Waterloo) 65-52. Three players depart for
Division I colleges, but five experienced juniors return.
3. Mater Dei, Santa Ana, Calif. (34-2) Previous: 4. Won CIF Division
II state championship.
4. Oak Hill Academy, Mouth of Wilson, Va. (31-4) Previous: 6. Won
three in-season tournaments, including the Academy National Invitational in
Houston. Does not compete in postseason.
5. Westchester, Los Angeles (32-3) Previous:
7. Won its second consecutive CIF Division I state championship. Coach Ed
Azzam thinks the returning players and an eligible transfer will form
another state-championship caliber team.
6. Woodlawn, Baton Rouge, La. (39-0) Previous: 8. Won its second
consecutive Class 5A state championship, extending its win streak to 54
games.
7. McQuaid, Rochester, N.Y. (27-1) Previous:
3. Won Class A state championship.
8. Dunbar, Fort Worth, Texas (37-1) Previous:
9. Won Class 4A state championship. Coach Robert Hughes, 74, says he’ll
return to lead a group of experienced underclassmen.
9. Montrose Christian, Rockville, Md. (20-1) Previous: 5. Closed season
on a 15-game win streak. Does not compete in postseason. Two starters are
back and the addition of foreign transfers could put coach Stu Vetter’s team
in national championship picture.
10. White Station, Memphis (36-2) Previous:
10. Won Class AAA state championship.
11. St. Patrick, Elizabeth, N.J. (27-4) Previous: 12. Won State
Tournament of Champions, beating Camden Catholic (Cherry Hill) 61-38. Won
Parochial B state championship.
12. Kickapoo, Springfield, Mo. (30-1) Previous: 11. Won Class 5 state
championship.
13. Lincoln, Brooklyn, N.Y. (31-4) Previous: 13. Won Class A State
Federation championship. Super junior guard Sebastian Telfair will lead a
solid core in search of another Federation title.
14. St. Raymond, Bronx, N.Y. (26-4) Previous: 14. Won New York CHSAA
Class A City championship. The program’s future looks bright after becoming
the first CHSAA school to win three sub-varsity city titles.
15. Fairfax, Los Angeles (28-4) Previous: 15. Runners-up in CIF
Southern Region Division I. Three losses were to crosstown rivals, No. 7
Westchester.
16. Rainier Beach, Seattle (26-3) Previous:
16. Won its second consecutive Class 3A state championship.
17. Rufus King, Milwaukee (25-0) Previous: 17.
Won Division I state championship.
18. Dillard, Fort Lauderdale (32-1) Previous: 18. Won Class 6A state
championship.
19. Cheyenne, Las Vegas (30-1) Previous: 20. Won Class 4A state
championship.
20. Horizon, San Diego (32-1) Previous: 22. Won its second
consecutive CIF Division IV state championship.
21. Bishop O’Connell, Arlington, Va. (25-5) Previous: 19. Won
Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament. All five starters return.
22. St. Joseph’s Prep, Philadelphia (30-2)
Previous: 21. Won Philadelphia Catholic League championship and the league’s
Southern Division title.
23. Christ the King, Middle Village, N.Y.
(26-8) Previous: 23. Won Class A, New York State Catholic championship.
24. Moeller, Cincinnati (23-4) Previous: 24. Won Division I state
championship.
25. Brookhaven, Columbus, Ohio (26-2) Previous: 25. Finished second
in Division I state tournament and won.
